Building a model in a notebook is one thing. Getting it into a regulated financial environment, where audit requirements, data residency rules, and model risk frameworks apply, is a different challenge entirely. This programme focuses on that second stage.
The production gap in financial ML
Many teams have data scientists who can train models but struggle to move them through compliance review and into live systems. The course was designed after interviews with ML leads at three South African banks and two European insurers, who described the same bottleneck: technical skills exist, but the integration knowledge does not. Participants work through realistic deployment scenarios that include MLOps pipelines, model cards, and SR 11-7 aligned documentation practices.
Cloud platforms covered include Azure Machine Learning and Google Cloud Vertex AI, with a module on multi-cloud architecture for organisations managing vendor risk. Each module ends with a peer review exercise where participants critique each other's deployment plans, which consistently proves more useful than solo assignments according to past cohort feedback.
Scope and honest expectations
The programme covers NLP for financial document analysis, reinforcement learning for portfolio rebalancing concepts, and real-time inference architecture. It does not cover trading strategy development or speculative market prediction. The focus stays on operational and risk-adjacent applications where ML has a clearer institutional use case.
Participants who complete the capstone project leave with a documented ML deployment case study they can reference in professional conversations. Results depend heavily on the complexity of the project each person chooses and the time they invest outside scheduled sessions.
Programme structure
Module 1 MLOps fundamentals for finance: CI/CD pipelines, model registries, and environment management on cloud platforms
Module 2 NLP applications in financial services: document classification, contract analysis, and earnings call processing
Module 3 Real-time inference architecture: latency constraints, streaming data with Kafka and cloud event services
Module 4 Model risk management: SR 11-7 alignment, model cards, challenger models, and ongoing validation
Module 5 Multi-cloud strategy and vendor risk: architecture decisions, data residency, and failover design
Module 6 Capstone project: end-to-end deployment of a financial ML system with full documentation and peer review
